Mother’s Day is celebrated in the United States on the second Sunday in May. Mother’s Day was first suggested as a day to promote peace by mothers whose sons had fought or died on opposite sides of the Civil War. It was to be a day where mothers of soldiers would recognize there commonalities and attempt reunite families that had been separated during this period.
Following other movements that endeavored to establish a day to honor mothers, Anna Marie Jarvis started to campaign in 1905 to establish the day as a national holiday. May 9, 1914 saw President Woodrow Wilson proclaim the first national Mothers as a day to honor mothers whose sons had died in the war.
Mother worship goes back to ancient times. Reverence to goddesses who were mother figures can be substantiated as far back as 6000BC. Each spring the Greeks celebrated Cybele the mother of the gods. Romans worshiped the goddess Mater Idaea during festivals in March. The Romans also celebrated Matronalia, honoring the goddess Juno who was the goddess of fertility in women and husbands gave their wives gifts.
